Dustin Smith begins his third season as athletic director.
During his tenure as athletic director, Smith has led the program's successful transition from a junior college program to a NCAA Division II program and was instrumental in the expansion of the program, which included the addition of three new support staff positions and the addition of men's and women's cross country.
Prior to becoming athletic director, Smith served as assistant athletic director during the 2007-08 season. As assistant athletic director, Smith guided the program through the first year of the two-year exploratory phase required for membership in NCAA Division II and assisted in day-to-day operations of the athletic department.
He also served as the department’s academic liaison, working closely with student-athletes in monitoring their academic progress.
Prior to joining the UA Fort Smith staff, he was the transfer enrollment manager for three years at East Central University in Ada, Okla., (2004-07) and director of recruitment for two years at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva (2002-04).
The Pawhuska, Okla., native also worked as student activities coordinator at Murray State College in Tishomingo, Okla., for one year (2001-02).
Smith holds bachelor’s degrees in mass communication (1999) and physical education (2002) from Northwestern and a master’s degree in sports administration from East Central (2005).
As a graduate assistant at Northwestern, Smith worked in the sports information department, creating media guides and writing news releases.
He has also worked as a sports writer, hosted coach’s shows and was a radio and television play-by-play announcer.
Smith is married to wife Jennifer, who is the UA Fort Smith cheerleading coach. The couple has a daughter, Riglee.
