Lions Ease Past Royals In Toy Toss Game

UAFS, Community Collect 5,013 Toys For Needy Children

UAFS collected a pair of wins on Saturday night.

Five players scored in double-figures as the Lions eased past the Ecclesia College Royals 113-59 in nonconference play at the Stubblefield Center in the fifth annual Toy Toss Game.

It was the second win in a row for the Lions (4-4), who improved to 4-0 against the Royals.

It also was a big win for UAFS and the River Valley Community as well. Together, the Lions and the community collected 5,013 toys for children of needy families in the River Valley for Christmas.

That brings the five-year total to almost 25,000 toys collected.

Sophomore guard Seth Youngblood led the Lions with 22 points, while junior forward Kenny Martin had 20, junior guard Josh Harmon 18, freshman guard DaVaunta Thomas 14 and junior forward Dusan Stojanovic 11.

The 113 points scored by the Lions is tied for fifth all-time in school history during the NCAA Division II era.

The Lions shot 51 percent from the field (36 for 71) – they were 11-for-28 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 73 percent from the free-throw line (30 for 41). The Lions out-rebounded the Royals by 22 rebounds (53-31).

Martin topped off his double-double with 10 rebounds. He also had 4 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots.

It was an exhibition game for Ecclesia, which competes in the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Royals shot 37 percent from the field (21 for 57) – they were 4-for-11 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 62 percent from the free-throw line (13 for 21).
Junior guard Wesley Bradford led the Royals with 12 points, while freshman forward Jarvis Green had 10.

Sophomore forward Michael Richardson had a team-high 7 rebounds.

Trailing 2-0, UAFS took the lead for good when Martin took a pass from Youngblood and scored on a layup with 19:25 left in the first half. That sent soft toys raining from the stands and the rafters from an announced crowd of 1,313 fans.

UAFS was assessed a delay of game technical foul, but like last season, Ecclesia coach T.K. Smith refused the accompanying free throws considering the purpose of the event.
