Just when it appeared the UAFS baseball team would finally be able to start its season-opening road series against Heartland Conference foe St. Edward’s University, Mother Nature put a damper on the Diamond Lions’ plans again.
The Diamond Lions were ahead 2-0 with one out and runners at first and second in the top of the first inning on Sunday when the slight drizzle turned into a downpour, making conditions unplayable.
UAFS and St. Edward’s will finish the suspended game, which is scheduled for nine innings, at 10 a.m. on Monday in Austin, Texas. When that game is finished, the Lions and Hilltoppers will then play one seven-inning game and one nine-inning game.
Conference rules stipulate that once the three-game series begins teams have 72 hours to finish the series.
It will make for a short week for both teams, especially UAFS. After returning home late Monday night, the Diamond Lions will leave on Thursday for a three-game conference series against St. Mary’s University that begins on Friday at San Antonio, Texas.
