Lions Earn All-Conference Honors

Three University of Arkansas-Fort Smith student-athletes have earned Heartland Conference All-Conference honors for their performances this past basketball season.

Junior guard /forward Vasha Sanders was named Second Team All-Conference. Sanders, who is from Little Rock, Ark., was the Lady Lions’ leading scorer with 13 points per game and was tied for the team lead with 5.7 rebounds per game. She also led the team with 63 steals.

Sanders, who was a two-time Heartland Conference Player of the Week, shot 38 percent from the field (113 of 295) and 68 percent from the free-throw line (85 of 126).

The duo helped lead the Lady Lions to a 12-14 overall record and a 9-7 record against Heartland Conference foes.

Junior forward Monica Spearman was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Spearman, who is from Dallas, Texas, was third on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per game and averaged 3.4 rebounds per game. She was tied for third on the team with 13 blocks and 38 steals.

The duo helped to lead the Lady Lions to a 12-14 overall record and a 9-7 record against Heartland Conference foes.

Junior guard Josh Simmons was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Simmons, who is from Houston, Texas, was the Lions’ leading scorer with 15.4 points per game and was the third-leading rebounder with 4.6 rebounds per game. He was second on the team with 73 assists and 13 blocks, third on the team with 27 steals.

            Simmons, who was a two-time Heartland Conference Player of the Week, shot 42 percent from the field (134 of 317) and 68 percent from the free-throw line (93 of 136).
