BENTONVILLE, Ark. – As the regular season nears its end, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith women’s tennis team continues its late season winning streak.
The Lady Lions (17-5) won their 11th match in a row on Tuesday afternoon, beating Rockhurst University 7-2. UA Fort Smith hasn’t lost since losing to the University of Central Oklahoma 5-4 on March 6 at Edmond, Okla.
UA Fort Smith won two of the three doubles matches. Freshmen Abby Whittemore and Cara Gilham beat Karsyn Betts and Mary Lanaghan 8-3 in the No. 1 doubles match, while freshman Emily Singleton and sophomore Tamra Bryson beat Maureen Rielley and Jaycie Schmidt 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Lady Lions won all but the No. 6 singles match. Singleton beat Rielley 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles match.
The Lions saw their two-match winning streak snapped with a 6-3 loss to Rockhurst. UA Fort Smith (8-12) won the No. 3 doubles match with sophomore Martin Tabler and junior Evan Piche’ beating Rodolfo Gauto-Marriott and David Maddox 9-7.
UA Fort Smith won the No. 3 singles match with sophomore Matheus Silva beating Zach Newell 6-2, 6-4 and won the No. 6 singles match with freshman Beau Basham beating Paulo Bombonatti 6-3, 6-3.
UA Fort Smith will close the regular season at 2 p.m. on Sunday when it hosts Seminole State College at Creekmore Tennis Center.
